Last night after dinner we decided we needed to get out of the house before bedtime. We were walking out of the house into the garage when Audrey tripped landing hard on the tile, her right arm on the door jam to the garage. She immediately started screaming loudly, which isn't exactly unusual for her so we weren't aware there was a problem until I noticed how she was favoring her right arm. She held it against her body and it just didn't look right. When we asked her to point to her nose she couldn't quite get her finger to her nose and her arm was shaking. Kirk and I were clueless on what a broken arm is like and didn't know the first thing
about urgent cares or ER's. We looked into where our insurance was covered and asked a friend where the best place in Vegas to go is. But when we had finally decided where to go Audrey started acting better so we second guessed ourselves about whether to take her in our not. But we finally decided it would be better to be safe than sorry, so I took Audrey to the ER (since urgent cares were closed and I didn't dare brave the only 24 hour one in Vegas at night alone with my baby) while Kirk stayed home with Kirsten since she was already asleep.
We checked in, had x-rays taken, waited a very very long time, then finally were told it was broken. She was so good all night, only crying a handful of times. We were there for 3 1/2 hours not leaving until 11:30 pm. She was so tired and only wanted to go home but she was so brave and let the doctors take good care of her. Her bone was bent (for lack of a better way to explain it) so they put on a hard splint and then reset her bone. She did surprisingly well through it all crying more through the shot than the bone reset. I didn't do so well during the bone reset, almost passing out and having to sit down and drink juice (add that to the reason why it's good I didn't become a nurse). We then had more x rays done and her arm, while not perfect yet, looks much better.
We will have to go to another doctor in a couple days to get a hard cast put on but for now she is rocking her first broken bone and sling. She doesn't act like she has a broken bone in the slightest. She runs a hundred miles an hour still collecting rocks everywhere she goes. She only acts like she is in pain when she is tired. She uses her broken arm to do everything she normally would use her arm for, but has found the advantage to hitting with a cast, oh joy.
Kirk and I are just a little dumbfounded that she broke her arm doing something as simple as tripping while walking out the door. She falls down dozens of times during the day, she is two! It makes me so grateful for the good health we have in our family. I sure love my baby girl and secretly enjoyed cuddling with her for three hours straight last night.
Oh Dynelle I'm so sorry!!! She looks so cute in her little cast though. I hope she is feeling better.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely sounds like it has been more traumatic for you than Audrey! Those pictures are so sweet, and I couldn't help but say, "Awwwwww..." as soon as I saw the picture of Kirsten and Audrey hugging. We'll pray that Audrey's arm heals perfectly.
ReplyDeletePoor girl! Out of my three kids, we still haven't had a broken bone (knock on wood). I'm glad she handled everything so well!
ReplyDeleteOh sweet girl, hope she's doing ok. Funny that our 2 girls that are so much alike both ended up with the family's first broken bones!
